The wildlife haven of Swanscombe Marshes is threatened by plans for the vast London Resort theme park. CPRE Kent is one of a coalition of conservation groups fighting this scheme, which would be disastrous for the site’s flora and fauna and destroy a critical green lung for local people. In January 2021, the Planning Inspectorate declared that it was accepting the developer’s application for a Development Consent Order to build the park. A six-month examination of the project, in which CPRE Kent would take part, had been expected to begin two to four months from that point; however, the developer failed to provide all the documents required by the inspectorate, meaning the preliminary meeting is now “unlikely to be held before April 2022”. In November 2021, the designation of Swanscombe Marshes as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) was confirmed by Natural England.
