Sea Link: please get writing (again!)
Supporters urged to make views known as latest National Grid consultation slated over limited range and publicity
National Grid’s latest consultation on revised plans for its Sea Link scheme has been slated for its limited range and lack of publicity, so campaigners are urging people to make their views known on this environmentally damaging scheme.
Sea Link entails the development of an underwater electricity link between Suffolk and Kent with onshore converter stations at either end (Minster-in-Thanet, in Kent’s case). It is bad news for the countryside and bad news for wildlife, as detailed here.
A third round of consultation on the scheme ended in August, while a further bout – aimed only at “affected persons with an interest in the land” – reflects the revisions apparently made by National Grid in response.
However, Save Minster Marshes, chaired by CPRE Kent’s own Peter Lorenzo, believes the changes to be inadequate and the proposed mitigation area to be no more than “a sop”.
Further, it believes National Grid should be consulting all stakeholders impacted by the proposals – “everyone who lives, works or enjoys the natural environment at Pegwell Bay and Minster Marshes”.
SMM has written a letter to supporters that details its concerns and urges them “to get writing (again!)”. To read the letter, click here.
