Climate Change

Campaign date: 10-01-2008

Climate Change

Climate change is likely to hit Kent hard over the coming decades and century:

  • Sea-level rise:
Kent has the longest coastline of any county in England and much of it is low-lying mud flats and salt marsh.
  • Water:
Droughts and floods likely to become more frequent and more severe. See our Water campaign.
  • Agriculture:
The nature of Kent agriculture is already changing. The area around Tenterden is becoming increasingly favourable for the production of sparkling wines. However, competition for land with urbanisation, ecology and sea-level rise will hurt our ability to be self-sufficient in food.
  • Historic buildings and landscapes:
Kent's rich, long history can be read throughout its landscape. Some of the finest buildings, castles and gardens can be found in the 'Garden of England'.
  • Biodiversity:
Kent's landscape is made distinctive through its native flora and fauna. This is likely to change substantially as conditions become less favourable for some of our familiar species and more favourable to those from further south.

Hard choices will need to be made on land use planning. It's not just a case that we don't make any more land...we are threatened with losing large areas to the sea.
